American Academy Audiology Reports Growth In Audiology Field

Audiology is a growing field, according to the American Academy of Audiology. Why? Because there is a growing trend of severe hearing loss in the United States and the United Kingdom, and the number of audiologists or hearing specialists are in greater demand.

According to a study by the American Academy of Audiology, “we might estimate (2013) 35 million people in the United States have measurable hearing loss and perhaps 1.2 million people have severe-to-profound hearing loss.”

Hearing loss has been a growing concern in the health and medicine fields. There are many causes for hearing loss, including:

● Loud machinery causing audiology concerns for workers
● Gun firing and warfare causing hearing loss among soldiers
● Ear buds, loud car stereo systems, and nightclub music causing audiology issues for young people
● Loud music causing hearing problems in musicians, dancers, and stage performers
● Accumulative hearing loss causing deafness among the elderly

Those interested in studying audiology are in higher demand at hearing aid clinics, hospitals, schools, physicians’ offices, health care facilities, and medical clinics. Fortunately, online degree programs for the audiology field are growing, too.

For those interested in studying audiology, a doctorate or professional degree is required. Online audiology degree programs are growing in popularity because online degree programs allow students to study at their own pace, the courses are often hosted online and can be replayed via video recordings if a student missed class. Online audiology courses are also more convenient, for they do not require students to drive to a campus in order to attend classes. Lastly, online audiology degree programs are often more affordable since there is less overhead for the school, but are still eligible for scholarships, student grants, and student loan programs.

Audiology is a growing field in the health and medicine industry, too. New audiologists must earn a doctoral degree to enter the practice. All audiologists must be licensed; requirements vary by state. However, audiology does not require students to be interns in their chosen field. The ability for an online student to graduate with a doctorate degree and enter the audiology profession is rather quick when compared to other medicine specialties.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, audiologists earn a median annual salary of $66,660, or $32.05 per hour. Their job is to “diagnose and treat a patient’s hearing and balance problems using advanced technology and procedures.”

“Employment of audiologists is expected to grow by 37 percent from 2010 to 2020, much faster than the average for all occupations. However, because it is a small occupation, the fast growth will result in only about 4,800 new jobs over the 10-year period.”

If you wish to become an audiologist, or enter the field of medicine with a specialty in audiology, choose an online degree program that meets your criteria.
