How Much Maths Teacher Make Per Year?

If you are interested in attending teacher school in order to get your teacher degree to teach mathematics, you may be curious as to how much you can expect to make. Your salary will be largely dependent on where you choose to work: if you are a mathematics teacher in high school or at a post-secondary level.

Teacher school to teach math in high school

If you are interested in teaching math in high school then you will first need to get your bachelor’s degree from an accredited university. If you know you want to ultimate go on to teacher school, and would like to teach mathematics, it would be a good idea get your undergraduate degree in mathematics, or a related field.

You will then have to qualify for, and be accepted to a teacher degree program. Most teacher degree programs are quite competitive, so it is important to have strong undergraduate grades to gain acceptance.

Your teacher courses will focus on the necessary skills you will need once you have graduated teacher skill, such as public speaking, child psychology, learning theories, and teaching fundamentals, such as creating a lesson plan. Once you have completed your in-class teacher courses, you will also need to complete a student teacher course, where you will first observe a mathematics teacher, and then act as one yourself. Most teacher school degree programs are one to two years in length.

Once you have completed teacher school, you will also need to get your professional designation. This will typically consist of applying to your local teacher’s college, and showing proof of your undergraduate as well as teacher degree. They may also require some additional testing.

Once you have completed teacher school and are certified to begin teaching high school mathematics you can expect to earn an average of $ 55,270 annually.

Teacher school to teach math in university

If you are interested in teaching mathematics at the university level, the path you will take to get there will be different. The majority of post-secondary teachers do not actually receive their teacher degree, or attend teacher school, but rather earn their PhD. This is because most individuals working in post-secondary institutions as professors spend a good portion of their time doing research, so teaching is not necessarily their main focus.

If you are interested in teaching mathematics in university you will need to earn both your Master’s and PhD. As part of your PhD program, you will have the opportunity to teach courses.

Someone who teaches mathematics as a university level will earn approximately $ 77,000 per year.
If you are interested in teaching mathematics as your career, then spend some time deciding where you might like to teach, as you can see, the career paths for either is quite different.
