Becoming a Microsoft Engineer

Microsoft Corporation is an American multinational corporation that manufactures and produces services and products associated with computing. Microsoft is a worldwide leader in software development and design therefore acquiring a position as a Microsoft engineer is extremely competitive.

Microsoft engineering involves the study and application of engineering to the design, development, and maintenance of Microsoft software. Microsoft engineers are knowledgeable and skilled professionals who have the creativity needed in developing Microsoft software programs. Their responsibilities include determining users’ needs in order to design and create software to meet their needs; suggesting upgrades for users’ existing programs and systems; ensuring that the software functions efficiently by performing maintenance and tests; and recording each aspect of the application for future reference.

In order to become a Microsoft engineer, students must complete a Bachelor of Science degree, specializing in computer science. During this four-year program, students are educated in areas such as Windows network security, directory services infrastructure, designing network infrastructures, Microsoft Windows OS, network engineering, network hosts, user interface, customized formatting, and generating project analysis reports. After students complete the bachelor’s degree program, they must gain experience in software development as well as using Cloud and Big Data technologies, Hadoop, MapReduce, Amazon EC2, and Azure. Students must have approximately five to eight years of experience before applying for a position at Microsoft.

After students complete the education and work experience requirements, they must pass the Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE). The MCSE measures the applicant’s ability to use Microsoft Windows servers when developing, installing, and administering infrastructures. If they successfully pass, they are able to acquire a position as a Microsoft engineer.

There are certain skills students must have in order to be successful in this profession. Microsoft engineers must be creative, innovative, and organized and have exceptional teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills.

Those who excel in the bachelor’s degree program in computer science, gain on-the-job experience, pass the MSCE, and encompass the skills and personality traits mentioned above, will no doubt be successful in this demanding, challenging, and rewarding profession.
